Medicare covers Cologuard, but only if you meet certain criteria. Medicare will cover one Cologuard test every three years for people who:
- Are aged 50-85
- Are at low to average risk for developing colorectal cancer
- Have no symptoms of colorectal cancer
- Do not have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, adenomatous polyps, or inflammatory bowel disease
If you meet these criteria, you can get Cologuard prescribed by your doctor and Medicare will cover the cost of the test. There are no copays or deductibles for Cologuard under Medicare.
If you do not meet the criteria for Medicare coverage of Cologuard, you may still be able to get the test through your private health insurance plan. Most private health insurance plans cover Cologuard, but you should check with your plan to see if you are eligible for coverage.
Cologuard is a stool DNA test that can detect colorectal cancer early, when it is most treatable. The test is simple and non-invasive, and it can be done at home. If your Cologuard test result is positive, your doctor will recommend follow-up tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, but it is one of the most preventable. Early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer can save lives. If you are eligible for Medicare coverage of Cologuard, I encourage you to talk to your doctor about getting the test.
