Dental, Vision, and Hearing Coverage Under Medicare
Dental, vision, and hearing coverage are important pieces to have for anyone looking to get health insurance. Under Medicare many of the routine or maintenance coverages for these areas are lacking in Part A and Part B. One way to obtain coverage for services like routine dental care, eye exams, and hearing aids is through the use of some Medicare Advantage plans. Below is a quick outline of coverages under Medicare, if any, that are provided to beneficiaries with Part A and Part B coverage.
Dental Coverage Under Medicare
If you find yourself utilizing only the Original Medicare plan, you will notice that it doesn’t provide much coverage for dental needs. Routine dental care, such as cleanings, exams, bridges, fillings, or crowns are all excluded from coverage under Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. The few times that you may be eligible for coverage on dental services are if it is required prior to surgery or if it is an essential part of another procedure that is being covered by Medicare.
Vision Coverage Under Medicare
As much of the population throughout the country continues to age, one of the biggest trends is the need for glasses or corrective lenses. If you find that you need to purchase contacts or use glasses, you may need to look at other coverage options other than Medicare. Typically, unless you are having cataract surgery to implant an intraocular lens, Part A and Part B will not cover any of the costs associated with purchasing seeing aids.
Hearing Coverage Under Medicare
Another trend that has seen spikes recently in the United States is the need for hearing aids. While useful and practical, new in-ear headphones have been on the rise with millions of people and have been linked to premature hearing loss. These miniature headphones fit comfortably in the ear, but also block the canal so that the sound is directed directly at the eardrum. If you do end up needing hearing aids, be aware that Original Medicare does not cover the exams or the devices themselves. You will more than likely have to 100% of the cost out of pocket unless you have another coverage option in place.
Other Coverage Options for Dental, Vision, and Hearing
While Original Medicare does not provide coverage for routine dental, vision, and hearing care, there are still options available to you. Since Medicare Advantage plans vary between private insurers, there is a good chance you can find a policy that provides all the coverage you will need. Some plans will even cover the cost of all three services and fill more gaps that Medicare Part A and Part B won’t.
