Does Medicare cover Eyeglasses?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover eyeglasses or contact lenses, except for one limited exception:

  • Medicare Part B covers corrective lenses after cataract surgery. This includes one pair of eyeglasses with standard frames or one set of contact lenses. You will pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for the lenses after each surgery, after you meet the Part B deductible.

Medicare Advantage plans, which are private health insurance plans that offer Medicare benefits, may cover eyeglasses and contact lenses. However, the coverage varies from plan to plan. Some plans may cover a certain amount of the cost of eyeglasses or contact lenses each year, while others may only cover certain types of lenses or frames.

If you are unsure whether your Medicare Advantage plan covers eyeglasses or contact lenses, you should contact your plan directly.

Here are some tips for getting affordable eyeglasses:

  • Shop around and compare prices. You can get eyeglasses from a variety of places, including online retailers, optical shops, and discount stores.
  • Consider buying used eyeglasses. There are many websites and stores that sell used eyeglasses at a fraction of the cost of new glasses.
  • Look for discounts and coupons. Many optical shops offer discounts to seniors and students. You can also find coupons for eyeglasses online and in newspapers. AARP even offers discounts at select realtors.
  • Consider getting vision insurance. Vision insurance can help you pay for the cost of eye exams and eyeglasses.
