Medicare Checklist: Everything You Need Before You Enroll

Enrolling in Medicare is an important milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming. Between the mailers, TV commercials, online ads, and advice from friends and family, it’s easy to wonder if you’re making the right decision.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

At Hitcho Insurance, we’ve helped thousands of Pennsylvania residents understand their Medicare options through our proven 4E Process—Evaluate, Educate, Endorse, and Enroll. Our goal is simple: Medicare Made Easy with Expert Guidance.

Before you enroll, use this checklist to make sure you’re prepared.

1. Know When You’re Eligible

For most people, Medicare eligibility begins when you turn 65.

Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month window that includes:

  • Three months before your 65th birthday month
  • Your birthday month
  • Three months after your birthday month

Missing your enrollment window could result in delayed coverage or penalties, depending on your situation.

If you’re still working or covered under an employer health plan, your timeline may be different. This is one reason it’s helpful to speak with an experienced Medicare advisor before making any decisions.

2. Gather Your Personal Information

Having the right documents ready makes enrollment much smoother.

You may need:

  • Social Security number
  • Medicare card (if you’ve already received one)
  • Driver’s license or government-issued ID
  • Current health insurance information
  • Employer coverage information (if applicable)
  • List of your current doctors and specialists
  • List of prescription medications
  • Preferred pharmacy

Having this information available will make comparing plans much easier.

3. Understand the Parts of Medicare

Many people are surprised to learn that Medicare isn’t just one plan.

Here’s a simple overview:

Medicare Part A

Helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and some home health services.

Medicare Part B

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, medical equipment, and many other healthcare services.

Medicare Part D

Provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies.

It’s important to know that Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage. If you choose a Medicare Supplement, you’ll typically also want a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Waiting too long to enroll in Part D could result in a late enrollment penalty unless you qualify for an exception.

4. Learn the Difference Between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage

This is one of the biggest areas of confusion for new Medicare beneficiaries.

Many people assume these plans are the same—they’re not.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

A Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare.

When a provider accepts Medicare:

  • Medicare generally pays its share of covered services.
  • Your Medicare Supplement typically helps pay the remaining eligible costs, depending on your plan.

Another advantage is consistency. While premiums may change over time, the benefits provided by standardized Medicare Supplement plans remain the same.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through private insurance companies.

These plans often have provider networks, different cost-sharing structures, and plan benefits that can change from year to year.

Choosing between these options depends on your healthcare needs, travel habits, preferred doctors, prescriptions, and budget—not simply which plan has the lowest premium.

5. Make a List of Your Doctors

Before choosing a plan, ask yourself:

  • Which doctors do I want to keep?
  • Which specialists do I see regularly?
  • Do I travel frequently?
  • Will I spend part of the year in another state?

These answers can significantly influence which type of Medicare coverage may be the best fit for you.

6. Write Down Every Prescription You Take

Prescription drug coverage isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Create an updated list that includes:

  • Medication names
  • Dosages
  • How often you take them
  • Preferred pharmacy

Even if you don’t currently take many medications, reviewing your options now can help you avoid surprises later.

7. Think About Your Healthcare Priorities

Everyone’s situation is different.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I visit specialists often?
  • Do I have ongoing medical conditions?
  • Do I prefer predictable healthcare costs?
  • Is flexibility in choosing doctors important to me?
  • Do I travel frequently?

The answers to these questions can help narrow your Medicare options.

8. Prepare Your Questions

There is no such thing as a bad Medicare question.

Some common questions include:

  • What’s the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?
  • Will I be able to keep my doctors?
  • Do I need prescription drug coverage?
  • What will my monthly costs look like?
  • What happens if my health needs change?

Writing your questions down before meeting with an advisor ensures you leave with the answers you need.

9. Work With an Independent Medicare Advisor

One of the most valuable steps on this checklist is choosing someone you trust.

As an Independent Pennsylvania Insurance Agency, Hitcho Insurance represents many of the nation’s leading Medicare insurance companies rather than just one carrier.

That means our recommendations are based on your individual needs—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Even better, our consultations are completely free. We’re compensated by the insurance companies, so there’s no additional cost to you for our guidance.

10. Don’t Rush Your Decision

Choosing Medicare isn’t about finding the “best” plan.

It’s about finding the plan that’s best for you.

Take the time to understand your options, ask questions, and compare coverage carefully. A thoughtful decision today can give you greater confidence in your healthcare for years to come.

Many of our clients tell us the same thing after meeting with us:

“The weight of my Medicare choice is off my shoulders.”

That’s exactly how the process should feel.
