What happens if your Medicare Advantage plan is terminated?

Losing your Medicare Advantage plan can feel overwhelming—but you won’t lose all your Medicare coverage. When a plan ends, Medicare ensures you still have access to healthcare. Here’s what to expect and what to do next.

Why Your Medicare Advantage Plan Might End

There are a few common reasons your plan could be terminated:

  • Nonpayment of premiums:
Most plans give you at least a two-month grace period. If you don’t pay within that time, your plan can disenroll you.

  • You moved out of your plan’s service area:
Medicare Advantage plans are regional. Moving to another county or state can make your current plan unavailable.

  • The plan itself ends:
Sometimes, an insurance company stops offering your plan in your area. You’ll receive advance notice and automatically revert to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

What Happens Next

If your plan ends, you’ll return to Original Medicare, which covers hospital and medical services. However, you’ll lose extras like dental, vision, and prescription benefits.

You can enroll in:

  • A new Medicare Advantage plan, or

  • A standalone Part D drug plan to pair with Original Medicare.

Your Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If your plan was terminated through no fault of your own, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

  • You have two months after your plan ends to choose a new one.

  • Your new coverage usually starts the first day of the following month.

If You Missed Payments

If you were disenrolled for nonpayment, Medicare’s “Good Cause” policy lets you request reinstatement within 60 days. If approved, you’ll need to pay your missed premiums within three months.

The Bottom Line

If your Medicare Advantage plan is terminated, don’t panic—you’re still covered by Original Medicare. But to avoid gaps, act quickly to choose a new plan or request reinstatement. Reviewing your plan each year and keeping your contact info updated helps prevent future disruptions.
