Depending on the plan, Medicare Supplement insurance may help with:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs: All Medigap plans cover 100% of Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used.
- Part B coinsurance or copayments: Every Medigap plan except Plans K and L covers 100%.
- First three pints of blood: Covered at 100% by all plans except Plans K and L.
- Hospice care: Part A hospice coinsurance or copayments are covered at 100% by all plans except Plans K and L.
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance: Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N provide 100% coverage.
- Part A deductible: Fully covered by all Medigap plans except Plans A, K, and L.
- Part B deductible: Plans C and F provide full coverage.
- Foreign travel emergency coverage: Available under Medigap plans other than A, B, K, and L.
- Out-of-pocket limit protection: Available through Plans K and L, with the limit changing annually.
Which Medicare Supplement Plan Should You Choose?
Because Medigap plans don’t all offer the same benefits, it’s important to compare the coverage available under each plan.
Your choice may depend on which costs you want help managing, whether you need foreign travel emergency coverage, and the level of protection you want from out-of-pocket expenses.
Also remember that Medigap coverage is for one person. If your spouse wants Medicare Supplement coverage, they will need a separate policy.
